Why are words spelled differently in different places in the Bible?

Legacy Standard Bible

Ever wonder why the LSB was translated a certain way? So do many members of the “Legacy Standard Bible Fan Group” on Facebook. In this series of articles, we will be highlighting some insightful questions about the LSB translation process along with the answers a few of the translators provided.

Should Uzza be spelled the same in 2 Samuel 6 as it is in 1 Chronicles 13? If so, should it be with or without the “h”?

Dr. Abner Chou provided an explanation for this supposed typo.

Good question. In 2 Sam 6 the name is spelt differently than 1 Chron 13 which is represented by the text.

However, in 2 Sam 6:3, 6 the name is spelt the same as 1 Chron 13 but because of later usages in 2 Sam 6 is smoothed out to be the same.

This is a really good example of showing how the Bible can spell things differently and that is important. Inerrancy deals with scriptural claims about reality. Spelling is not necessarily a matter of reality (it is about what we as a society accept as proper). So differences in spelling demonstrate that this is not a threat to inerrancy. Also, it shows that 2 Samuel came way before 1-2 Chronicles AND so have different emphases and such which is why they, though of course telling the same stories and doing so inerrant, should have different emphases in preaching and teaching.

The Gospel of Mark wants us to focus upon how Jesus is the Suffering Servant. The very opening of the gospel begins with a proclamation from the book of Isaiah, the book that proclaims that Jesus will be the Suffering Servant. From that point forward, Mark brings out how Jesus fulfills those ancient prophecies. To ...

*This article was originally published on https://www.masters.edu/news/legacy-article-bible.html and is reposted with permission. Both the mandate and the model for Bible translation are contained in Scripture itself. God has promised His Son a people from every people, nation, and language (Dan 7:14). The gospel must therefore go to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). That is the ...
